TOP TIPS OF THE MONTH

WHY HAVE YOUR PAST ATTEMPTS TO DELEGATE FAILED?

Many accountants I have spoken to are reluctant to delegate many tasks to someone else in the firm because they are afraid of mistakes being made. But if your firm is going to grow, you need to learn how to leverage your time, and the time of your entire team.

The most common reasons delegation has failed in the past are:

1. No systems or procedures: It is important that there are documented systems in place for any staff member to follow.  Don’t assume that because you can perform the task without mistakes that someone else will do the same.

2No training:  You need to initially invest time to train staff on the tasks you are delegating in order to reap the future benefits.

3. Lack of management:  When you say that you can’t entrust a task to someone else, what you are really saying is that you don’t know how to manage the process so the result is accurate, timely and to the standard required.

4. Delegating to the wrong person: It’s important to delegate according to the strengths and weaknesses of your team members. The person who is the best match may not have the specific skills or knowledge required but this can be taught.

5. Unrealistic expectations: No task will ever be done exactly as you do it! However, it should be done to an agreed standard and time frame. Do you have unrealistic expectations? If so, perhaps it’s time to reassess.

Introducing our training program: Principles of effective delegation

Many accountants find it difficult to delegate. Effective delegation techniques can increase your productivity by up to 50%. Here are some of the key elements of the program that will help you develop your own delegation process:

    - Delegate work and follow up effectively
    - Divert jobs, tasks and calls to the right people
    - Set expectations and address performance issues

The aim of this course is to develop your skills in managing the process of delegation from selection of the right person and tasks to delegate, to the final stage of reviewing and giving feedback.

The program comes in CD-ROM format and incorporates an audio powerpoint presentation for individual or group presentation, a workbook and supporting documents.

We are offering this program for $165 (including GST). The program comes with a money back guarantee (return the program within 14 days of purchase and we’ll return your fee, no questions asked).  Click here for more information on the principles of effective delegation.

It is difficult to delegate tasks to other staff members. If you want to implement delegation effectively, contact us for further information at
